Characterizing coastal cod vocalization using a towed hydrophone array

چکیده

Abstract To better understand spawning vocalizations of Norwegian coastal cod (Gadus morhua), a prototype eight-element coherent hydrophone array was deployed in stationary vertical and towed horizontal modes to monitor sounds during an experiment spring 2019. Depth distribution aggregations monitored concurrently with ultrasonic echosounder. Cod recorded on the are analysed provide time–frequency characteristics, source level after correcting for one-way transmission losses from locations array. The vocalization frequencies range ∼20 600 Hz peak power frequency ∼60 Hz, average duration 300 ms, mean 163.5 ± 7.9 dB re 1 μPa at m. Spatial dependence received rates is estimated using measurements as horizontally deeper surrounding waters shallow water inlet areas experimental site. bathymetric-dependent probability detection regions quantified found be significantly reduced shallow-water inlet. We show that towable moving vessel invaluable because it can survey activity multiple locations, providing continuous spatial coverage complementary fixed sensor systems temporal given location.

Passive acoustic monitoring using a towed hydrophone array results in identification of a previously unknown beaked whale habitat.

Beaked whales are diverse and species rich taxa. They spend the vast majority of their time submerged, regularly diving to depths of hundreds to thousands of meters, typically occur in small groups, and behave inconspicuously at the surface. These factors make them extremely difficult to detect using standard visual survey methods. However, recent advancements in acoustic detection capabilities...

Adaptive Beamforming of a Towed Array During a Turn

During maneuvering, towed array beamforming degrades if a straight array is assumed. This is especially true for high-resolution adaptive beamforming. It is experimentally demonstrated that adaptive beamforming is feasible on a turning array, provided that array shape is estimated. The array shape can be inferred solely from the coordinates of the tow vessel’s Global Positioning System (GPS) wi...

Towed Array Technology: Development for a Better Sonar System Performance

In present missions of submarines, the detection of hostile targets is one of the main objectives. To achieve these objectives modern submarines are well equipped with sonar sensors and signal processing units for all acoustical frequency ranges. The detection and analysis of silent or distant targets is the main task of towed array systems. Towed arrays have their advantages in the low frequen...

Noise Localization Method for Model Tests in a Large Cavitation Tunnel Using a Hydrophone Array

Model tests are performed in order to predict the noise level of a full ship and to control its noise signature. Localizing noise sources in the model test is therefore an important research subject along with measuring noise levels. In this paper, a noise localization method using a hydrophone array in a large cavitation tunnel is presented. The 45-channel hydrophone array was designed using a...

Eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix for a towed array.

It is well known that observations of the spatial sample covariance matrix (SCM, also called the cross-spectral matrix) reveal that the ordered noise eigenvalues of the SCM decay steadily, but common models predict equal noise eigenvalues. Random matrix theory (RMT) is used to derive and discuss properties of the eigenvalue spectrum of the data SCM for linear arrays, with an application to ocea...
